Have you noticed how almost everybody has sparkling white teeth these days? There are several ways you can whiten your teeth.
- Toothpastes
- Over-the-counter products
- Professional products
- Treatments provided by your dentist
Are they all safe to use? I asked an expert — Meghann Dombroski, DMD, MPH. She’s an orthodontist at mBrace Orthodontics in Falmouth, Maine.
When used as directed, these products are safe to use and are mostly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as a cosmetic product. Although safe and effective, some people can experience minor side effects like irritation to gum tissue or tooth sensitivity.
Even though whitening or bleaching products are safe for human use, it is best to consult your dentist to find out if you are a good candidate for tooth whitening and what types of bleaching would be best for you.
For example, if you have tooth-colored fillings in your front teeth or have sensitive teeth, be sure to talk to your dentist about teeth whitening products. He or she will be able to recommend the best type and plan for you!
You can connect with Dr. Dombroski on the mBrace Orthodontics website or on Facebook. And let me know if you have any more questions about teeth or gums or other health-related issues.
